It's a composites thing. What is said to be the first high-volume structural body application in a weatherable, molded-in-color (MIC) carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) debuted on a series of roof receivers (brackets) to secure hardtops and soft tops on 2021 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Gladiator pickups from Stellantis. The composite material offered comparable mechanical performance at significantly lower weight than the benchmark steel. The very properties that make composites valuable in applications such as wind energy, automotive and aerospace can make them challenging from a sustainability perspective. Wind turbine blades, for instance, are too large to get in the building and too tough to cut with a saw. But, it is possible to recycle these materials and, in some cases, the resulting feedstock is both sustainable and cost-effective. Infrastructure in the U.S., particularly regarding the deterioration of a number of bridges across the country, has been a large topic of discussion in recent years, even more so with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law designating nearly $400 billion in infrastructure investments. Even more recently, the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, due to a container ship accident, has sparked a new round of discussion about bridge repairs. In this episode of CW Talks, experts from fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites manufacturer Creative Composites Group discuss the role of composites in infrastructure projects today, including composite solutions for bridge rehabilitation and protecting waterfront structures. Thanks to Scott Reeve and Corey Sechler with CCG for taking time to talk about their work in this area. 🎧 Listen and read here: https://lnkd.in/gHytC-pN ___ #composites #infrastructure #bridges #keybridge #CWtalks

This is part two in our webinar series with Dr. Phil Gralla and Dr. Nicholas Ecke. In part one they established a strong foundation in kinetic models. In part two they delve into the exciting realm of #machinelearning and its transformative potential for composite manufacturing. See how machine learning empowers composite manufacturers to achieve unprecedented accuracy in predicting key production parameters such as temperature, pressure and cure time. This translates to reduced cycle times and waste while increasing production throughput to maximize efficiency. Drs. Gralla and Ecke will provide concrete examples and case studies demonstrating how to bridge the gap between meticulously-controlled laboratory experiments and the realities of the production floor, overcoming the limitations of kinetic models. 🔸 Register today: https://lnkd.in/gKAiiirs 🔸 ____ #composites #kineticmodels #sustainability
